Ruth's Chris Steak House Seattle, Washington

Another wonderful amenity to staying at the Grand Hyatt in Seattle, Washington was for our dinner plans. Back in Reno when I was planning all of the specifics  of the trip I knew  I wanted to take my aunt out for a special dinner. We had both eaten at high-end steak houses in our lifetime but we had never done so together. The special restaurant I chose was Ruth’s Chris Steak House in Seattle, Washington which is connected to the hotel lobby.

I had seen a program online called Open Table but hadn’t known anyone myself who had used it. I decided what the heck, logged on, and made a reservation for the Saturday night we would arrive in Seattle at 8 p.m. There was also a notes section and I typed in where I would be traveling from and that it was a very important once in lifetime bucket list dinner with my aunt.

When we got back from our walk down to Pike Place Market I walked across the lobby into the restaurant and to the maître d stand where the hostess with the mostest was standing. I asked if I my reservation was confirmed and she said, “Absolutely Mr Vogler, 8 p.m. We also got your note that this is a very special night.” Hey, how ’bout them apples?Ruth's Chris Steak House Seattle, Washington

When we arrived for dinner the same hostess was there along with a maître d and she said with a glowing smile, “We have our best table for your special night.” Really? Well hey, high-five Open Table and Ruth’s Chris Steak House in Seattle, Washington! As they escorted us to our table it had a very Edward and Vivian elegant feel to it. It was also decorated with an extra touch of elegance whereas the other tables were not. They had given us the best seat in the house and my aunt and I exchanged thoughts that either they thought one of us was gravely ill. Or that I was going to propose to my aunt.

This would obviously be a no expenses spared dinner and I started off with a glass of their Chateau Ste. Michelle & Dr Loosen, an Eroica Riesling out of the Columbia Valley in Washington State. I was very excited to try one of their elite local wines and this had peach and lime aromas with a hint of earthiness to it. It was really good.Ruth's Chris Steak House Seattle, Washington

Our selections were made and please keep in mind that my aunt is almost a vegetarian but she will eat fish from time to time. She also does not drink alcohol and did not here.

Her Caesar Salad arrived with Romaine lettuce, Romano cheese and a creamy Caesar dressing. Shaved parmesan cheese and fresh black pepper topped her starter. The only food demerit I would give Ruth’s Chris Steak House in Seattle, Washington was that this high-end steak house didn’t make their Caesar dressing table side and there were no anchovies as has always been the case at top steak houses I’ve eaten at. Hey, for a $200 dinner you can nit-pick in a review. I had a bite and the dressing containing each component of the garlic, mustard, mayonaisse, vinegar and lemon juice were married together perfectly with the cheeses and lettuce.Ruth's Chris Steak House Seattle, Washington

For my appetizer when I saw they had a Veal Osso Buco Ravioli I was good to go. I’ve always wanted to try professionally cooked bone marrow and this Italian dish is traditionally served with that from veal shank in the filling. Add spinach and mozzarella inside with this saffron-infused pasta and a white wine demi-glace and you are going to be experiencing some of the best ravioli you’ve ever had. Each bite melted in my mouth and the moment was over too fast.Ruth's Chris Steak House Seattle, Washington

Next was their incredible Lobster Mac & Cheese and yes, along with the ravioli, this too was all for myself as my aunt had no interest. I know, I know…to come to Ruth’s Chris Steak House in Seattle, Washington and have macaroni and cheese. Let me tell you though, the tender lobster, the blend of three cheeses which I believe were Parmesan, Gruyere and Cheddar. Topped with Italian breadcrumbs and parsley this was an elegant, al dente, guilty pleasure delight. My aunt had their very decadant jumbo sea scallops and shrimp for her entrée. It had a delicious white wine shiitake butter sauce, was carefully spiced and served over a fluffy bed of soft rice. She let me taste it and I had to show great restraint. The scallops and shrimp were cooked perfectly and the sauce literally enticed a delightful moan from me.Ruth's Chris Steak House Seattle, Washington
Just prior to the arrival of the king of the night I knew I wanted some mushrooms to accompany it and wow these were off the chart amazing. Delicate, tender, broiled mushroom caps stuffed with crabmeat and melted Romano cheese. Mushroom haters, this would help you get over it…Ruth's Chris Steak House Seattle, Washington

The crown jewel was the delivery of a classic Ruth’s Chris Steak House in Seattle, Washington entree on a 500 degree sizzling hot plate from the 1800 degree oven it was cooked in. The steak stayed nice and warm the entire time as I was eating it.

Meet the 22 ounce Cowboy Ribeye. The best Prime steak you can imagine to go along with a brilliantly blurry picture because my hands were shaking with excitement. I took my steak knife and fork and it was literally like cutting through butter. Each bite required only a couple of chews as the incredibly tender meat dissolved in a cascade of exploding flavors in my mouth. To end the night, a caramel cheese cake with berries (of which my aunt could not even taste for health reasons) and I was ready to be carted out on a stretcher afterwards. The intoxicating filling along with the flaky crust were heaven.Ruth's Chris Steak House Seattle, Washington

As you can see, they had raised the lights and we closed the place down and I wanted to snap one last picture. To show you not only our VIP table that overlooked the entire restaurant but I wanted to remember this night forever.Ruth's Chris Steak House Seattle, Washington

We left the restaurant and walked back into the Grand Hyatt Seattle hotel lobby. My aunt went upstairs to her room and I spoke with the concierge about a very special idea I had for the next day but it was up in the air if he could make it happen. Stay tuned…

  1. I cannot believe you ate that.ENTIRE.DINNER!!!!! If you ever come to Philly, we’re going to a Brazilian steakhouse called Fogo de Chao. It’s expensive and all you can eat, but since I can’t eat very much, especially meat, They walk around with skewers of all kinds of meat and you have a little disk on the table. When you want more meat, you turn it over to green. Red means you’re pausing or, in my case, finished. it’s a waste of money for me.     I’ve been using Open Table for years. You get points for using it which are good for money off subsequent meals. You should even use it when you book a reservation in Reno. I really like it when we’re in a new place—and as you know, that happens quite often.

    • I can’t eat like that every day but when I can hit my right groove yes I really eat that much food. Did I feel great 2 hours later?? No! Did I regret it? Not even! Fogo de Chao sounds absolutely fantastic when I visit. Right after we settle on the Philly’s best cheesesteak place. I remember we bantered on that a bit in the past. That is great on Open Table and super smart that I use them here in Reno! Duh, I never thought of that though I never get reservations here. I’m special. Kidding! Please stay warm back there, Suzanne! 🙂

    Raviol, Lobster Mac and Cheese, Mushrooms!!!!! Yum!!! Pics look great! Im hungry now!
    But my OMFG moment was that steak! Might have been a blurry picture but still looked mouth watering! As my daughter would say… I have?

    This is a wonderful description of one evening, which really seems a special one! You never miss a detail. Do you carry a journal with you all the time like your camera? Or there is an inbuilt writing stick?!
    Love those pictures Mike, the food seems so mouth watering and did you eat that cheese cake all alone?! Awesome memories! Thanks for sharing.

    • I journal would be awesome for my food posts except for one thing. I never want to be rude to my guest as they are already being tolerant (knowing ahead of time) that I will be shooting photos. So, what I do is take photos of the menu itself of the items we order . Pretty clever huh, Balroop? I’m glad you liked the pictures! 🙂

  5. O.M.G. You had me at Ruth’s Cris. Two words, that’s all it takes. We have very special memories of dining at Ruth’s Cris here in Washington, D.C., usually for special occasions such as our son’s graduation for Georgetown University, we went to dinner RC before going to the graduation ball. Fantastic choice for your Seattle dinner. Damn. Now I’m hungry.

    • Ha, my aunt had the SAME reaction Patti!! I had never heard of them despite my loyal devotion to virtually any/every travel show related to/associated with food! When I told her where I was taking her she said, “Wow!! That is a really nice place!” I’ve been to some better ones but by no means am I complaining even remotely about our meal and experience there! My food posts drive me nuts too just fyi LOL 🙂

    • Ha, ya know in allllll of these years I’ve only asked for (and gotten) TWO recipes from chefs!! One was for a girlfriend’s favorite seafood dish and the other is about a sandwich that I hope to write a post on this year! I’m that far backed up, Mette 🙂

  7. OMG! You had me drooling at Ruth Chris before seeing the pictures even.. :-). The food is absolutely amazing, and your pictures look mouthwatering. I am not a big fan of mac and cheese, but l would have had a good go at that one. The dessert, oh my…Nuff said! I laughed so hard at what they must have thought about the special night..hah hah! You should have gone down on one knee and proposed to your aunt just to give them a jolt..probably would have scored another dessert..hah!

  9. Mike, I’m too excited to hear what the special surprise was, you can’t leave us on a cliffhanger like that!

    The food obviously sounds amazing, but do you know what stands out to me most about this post? The phrase ‘how bout them apples’! I’ve never heard that one before but after you’ve used it a couple of times in your last few posts I had to go and look it up! I like it a lot, going to have to incorporate it into my own vocabulary. How’d you like them apples?! (Am I using it right? Please tell me I am!)

    • You are using it just perfect!! Go to You Tube and enter Matt Damon How do you like them apples. It’s from the movie Good Will Hunting and is the crowning moment in any movie of the phrase. You crack me up in a GREAT way and I love your comments with your interest in all of these things, Catherine!! I want you to do a Vlog so I can hear you say it with your awesome English accent! 🙂

  10. I love that your first picture is dessert! I would have been stuffed after the appetizer and totally happy, to boot! Lobster mac ‘n cheese – jumbo sea scallops & shrimp – stuffed mushrooms – oy vey! How to choose? I need to find the nearest Ruth’s Chris steakhouse… oh poo, it’s over 2 hours away *sigh*.

    Great story-telling, as usual. Well, factual telling, anyway. You have a way of drawing people in and making them want to vacation wherever you describe!

  11. Yum! Your meals look so freakin’ good. I have to say, you were hungry that night, Mike! Lol. I’m stuffed just reading this post. I’m a huge mushroom lover, so those would’ve been right up my alley. And the lobster mac and your aunt’s scallops – oh yeah! Can’t go wrong with that. And I love the look of your cheesecake. It doesn’t look like any other cheesecake I’ve ever seen before (shape-wise), but it looks so decadent and so good. I’m so hungry now – thanks! 😉

    • I most definitely can not eat like that all of the time. And the older I’ve gotten it’s become more difficult to pull of the huge feats. Like my buddies and I doing burger challenges all over town. I certainly paid a price later that night but I would do it alllll over again if given the chance! You, Jave and I would have so much fun eating out at restaurants, Dana! 🙂

  12. What a lovely meal for you to share with us. Are you using a cell phone camera to get those pics? They turned out really good considering the low-light setting. I’ve dined at Ruth’s Chris once in Charlotte, and we only went because half of it was paid for with Christmas gift cards 😉 One opened in Boise about a year ago, so maybe I’ll get to give it a try one of these days.

    • I was JUST thinking of Boise last night on a Diner, Drive-in’s and Dive show!! They have some amazing restaurants up there. Of course Twin Peaks would likely be first on my list there LOL! I’m using my Canon in these photos…I frequently switch lenses and to my iPhone depending on the angle and how much room I have to move. The one thing I do NOT do is bother other diners. That is a huge part of my own personal etiquette in doing food posts. I hope you are having a great week, Jeri! 🙂

    • Finally, someone asks!! I LOVE you so much for always reading the details, Lisa!! That was a montage to Edward and Vivian in the movie Pretty Woman when they went to that 5 star restaurant for the business dinner. When my aunt and I were being escorted to our tables that moment in the movie literally popped into my head. It was magic! This weekend only continued to get better, Lisa 🙂

  15. I love those bucket list meals! I did eat at a Ruth’s Chris Steak House in Vegas. My dad was traveling on business, and I was visiting my brother during the same week so my dad took us all out on his company’s dime. Score!
    I wish I could tell you I ordered fabulous things but I was in a picky phase and I think I had like.. chicken…

  16. What wonderful choice you made Mike. When it got to the Lobster Mac, I thought wow he didn’t order steak! And then I saw it wow. I love your descriptions. Even though I’ve just eaten dinner I want to eat everything you ordered (or at least taste it). Your Aunt’s Sea Scollops and Shrimp would have been divine. How lovely for you to have a special dinner together. Thanks for the journey.

    • It was definitely an epic eating night for me, Jan! I still will say I can make the best Mac and Cheese (and I have more than one recipe) but when you’ve had a glass of wine, the ambience, the company…everything tastes better ya know what I mean? 🙂

    • Ha, I was sooooo thinking of you when I was writing this because of that steak, Melissa! 🙂 I’ve made stuffed mushrooms at home that were really good but mine had pork (there is a post on them), not crabmeat, and they weren’t as ginormous as these were! That cheesecake was insanely good and I have bad news for you. There will be more “evil” food posts ahead, my great friend, so cover your eyes! 🙂

  19. ooh what an amazing dinner you and your aunt had Mike, what a great night out. I have been only twice to Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse once in New York and once in Maui, Hawaii. Both times, it was an incredible experience and the food totally was totally outstanding. It’s such a shame they don’t have Ruth’s Chris around here. Your photos are fabulous, now I want to go to Seattle so I can go have dinner there.

  20. Ok first off–I was dying at the “they thought I was proposing to my aunt” part, that’s hysterical! But AMAZING you got the best table in the house, NOT an easy feat! (and isn’t OpenTable fabulous?? We use them for everything here in NYC, it’s easy to make a reservation and cancel one, plus you rack up points for money off, which is always nice!;-) That meal looks amazing (yes, even the vegetarian is saying so!) Seriously, that is a NICE choice of dining you made, it’s one of the top places here in NYC too (I’ve never been!;-) And good wine selections too, my friend!

    • It’s ironic mention the bone marrow because had you not known ahead of time I can almost guarantee you wouldn’t after eating it, Kristi! It was such a rich, smooth texture with the cheese and was literally like eating melted beef. I think I could make a believer out of you! It’s awesome to hear from you always…and when we get to visit we will definitely do up a great steak dinner…after I get mac and cheese with Tucker 🙂

  26. Have only tried once, in Niagara Falls…..and I must agree, it was pretty transcendent as culinary experiences go…..though I don’t remember having enough room to try as many dishes as you did!

    Ironically it’s right beside a fabulous Brazilian steakhouse (Brasa) too. So much food (and drink), so little time….

  33. This first cake is just to die for! Do you know the recipe? I would love to bake it!

      1 tb unsalted butter; melted
      1 tb graham cracker crumbs
      2 lb regular cream cheese
      1 1/4 c sugar
      4 lg eggs
      1 ts lemon zest
      2 ts vanilla extract
      1/4 c heavy cream
      1/4 c sour cream


      Adjust oven rack to middle position and preheat oven to 325 degrees.
      Place foil over bottom disk of a 9-inch springform pan, tucking excess
      underneath disk; assemble pan. Pull up foil around pan sides. Brush
      interior of pan with butter. Sprinkle graham cracker crumbs into pan,
      tilting it in all directions to coat evenly with crumbs. Cover exterior
      of pan with a sheet of heavy-duty foil and set in a large roasting pan.
      Bring a kettle of water to a boil for water bath.

      Meanwhile, beat cream cheese with an electric mixer until smooth.
      Gradually add sugar and beat on medium speed until it is fully
      incorporated, about 3 minutes. Add eggs, one at a time, beating until
      just incorporated and scraping down bowl after each addition. Add zest
      and vanilla and beat until just incorporated. Stir in cream and sour
      cream by hand.

      Pour batter into springform pan. Set roasting pan on oven rack, set
      springform pan in it, and pour in enough boiling water to come about
      halfway up the side of springform pan. Bake until perimeter of cake is
      set but center jiggles when pan is tapped, 55 to 60 minutes. Turn off
      heat and leave oven door ajar, using a long-handled kitchen fork or spoon
      if necessary to hold it open for 1 hour. Remove springform pan from water
      bath and set on a wire rack; cool to room temperature. Cover and
      refrigerate until chilled, at least 4 hours. Cheesecake can be
      refrigerated for up to 4 days

  38. That’s a lot of food and it all looks delicious, especially the ravioli and shrimp/scallop dishes. We went to a Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse in Niagara Falls, Ontario some years ago. It was great, but incredibly expensive! You obviously went “all out” for your vacation. Good to make those memories! 🙂

  40. Mike these Seattle posts have been like a shot of Heaven for Inion & myself. We are truly living vicariously through you my friend. A dream of ours this is one way to enjoy what we cannot have. And then one day we will take our dream visit to the Emerald City and say we finally were able to taste and see what Mike prepared us for!!! Lovely taste of Seattle my friend, sharing this now for all our friends to appreciate it!!! 😉 xoxox

  41. On shining white plates, black charred lines clashing with bright pink insides can console, sate, seduce. A good cut can dance with red wine or whisky, will happily follow Martini sharpeners and won’t be drowned out by the coffee that follows.
