The day Sonamarg made me stop rushing through Kashmir: Meadows, glaciers and silence

Sonamarg is located at an elevation of approximately 2,800 metres above sea level within the Kashmir Valley, and is surrounded by stunning mountains, rivers, and alpine meadows. It is an incredible site to visit; however, what endures for me about Sonamarg was not any singular feature, but rather having the opportunity to slow down. Most travellers visit Kashmir in a rush, pursuing landmark vistas, busy local markets, and making the best use of photography. I came to Sonamarg with that same perspective.

By the time I left, that mindset had disappeared.

Sonamarg’s vast meadows

The Sonamarg meadows are at the core of Sonamarg. When a person arrives, they are often shown evidence of the meadows first and foremost. When I arrived, I had just registered at our lodge and went for a stroll through the meadows.

I strolled through the meadows without any path to follow or a specific viewpoint in mind. I just walked around seeing what I could discover throughout the large open meadows. There were horses grazing, small streams flowing, and the mountains were so close to me that I could reach out and touch them.

For the first time in days, I stopped checking the time. The longer I walked, the less important my plans seemed. Sonamarg was not asking me to rush. It was inviting me to stay still for a while.

Thajiwas Glacier is Sonamarg’s most famous attraction for good reason

Located a few kilometres from the main town, Thajiwas Glacier attracts visitors throughout the travel season. Snow remains here long after it has disappeared from many nearby areas.

I started early the next morning. The trail itself was beautiful. Wildflowers lined parts of the path. Meltwater streams flowed beside the route. Every turn seemed to offer a better view than the last.

When I finally reached the glacier, I expected to spend a few minutes there. Instead, I stayed for nearly an hour. The ice-covered slopes stood against dark mountains and blue skies. There was very little noise apart from the sound of water flowing nearby.

Normally, I would have taken a few photographs and moved on. This time, I sat down and simply looked around. It felt like the glacier had all the time in the world. Slowly, I realised I did too.

The Sindh River brings life and calm to the entire Sonamarg valley

Flowing through the valley, the Sindh River is one of Sonamarg’s defining features. Its clear water and constant movement shape much of the surrounding landscape.

One afternoon, I found a quiet spot along the riverbank. The water rushed over rocks with surprising force. Yet the atmosphere felt peaceful rather than dramatic. I sat there with a cup of tea from a nearby stall. Minutes turned into an hour.

The river became the soundtrack to the afternoon. There was nothing special happening. Yet it became one of my favourite memories from the trip. Sometimes, the simplest moments stay with us the longest.

The mountain evenings show why Sonamarg deserves more than a day trip

Many visitors stop in Sonamarg for only a few hours. They see the main attractions and continue their journey. Staying overnight gives you a completely different experience. As evening approached, the valley became even quieter. The crowds thinned out. The air turned colder. Soft golden light settled across the mountains.

I watched the peaks change colour as the sun slowly disappeared. Gold became pink. Pink became grey. Nobody seemed eager to leave. Everyone around me appeared content to sit quietly and enjoy the view.

It was one of those rare travel moments that are best enjoyed when unplanned.

Choosing the right stay helps you experience Sonamarg at a slower pace

The right accommodation can shape your entire trip. Many hotels in Sonamarg offer mountain views and easy access to the valley’s main attractions. I quickly realised that waking up surrounded by mountains changed the pace of my day.

Instead of rushing out the door to start my day, I was able to take my time and enjoy what awaited me outside my window. This slower start gave me a more relaxed experience in my travelling.

What Sonamarg taught me about travel?

Prior to my arrival in Sonamarg, I believed that I was successful in travel based on the number of sites I had explored. Sonamarg taught me otherwise.

The better experiences were not related to checklists or locations. Instead, some of my best experiences took place while sitting near a river, walking through a meadow, or watching light from the sun fade on the mountains.

The glaciers in Sonamarg were beautiful. The meadows were fun. The scenic views from Sonamarg were incredible, but the silence is unforgettable. Sonamarg provided an opportunity for me to enjoy all the world-famous tourist attractions within the area, but more importantly taught me to slow down and relax.

And that turned out to be the most memorable part of the journey.
