The short answer
We could not confirm a publisher licence for MangaOwl, so we don’t link to it or to its copies; every app below is run or licensed by a manga publisher. You don’t have to pay to read legally, though. MANGA Plus gives you the first three and newest three chapters of every series free, and in English you can read every chapter of an ongoing series once for free [1]. Shonen Jump keeps its latest chapters free [2], K MANGA unlocks one chapter a day [6], and WEBTOON offers “millions of episodes for FREE” [7].
Checked 3 October 2026. Free allowances change, so the app’s own page has the final word.

How do legal manga apps give chapters away free?
They use four systems, alone or combined: the latest chapters free, free chapters on a schedule (daily or weekly), one ad per chapter, or free episodes with paid early access. Legal apps don’t open everything for free, but once you know which systems an app uses, you know what you can read without paying:
- Latest chapters freeThe newest chapters cost nothing; older ones are locked. Used by MANGA Plus and the VIZ apps [1] [2] [4].
- Free chapters on a scheduleOne chapter unlocks each day, or every 23 to 24 hours, on K MANGA, Comikey, Mangamo and INKR [6] [9] [12] [16]; Omoi adds new free chapters every week [14].
- Watch an ad to readOne ad unlocks one chapter. Used by Comikey and INKR [9] [16].
- Free, with paid early accessMost episodes are free; you pay only to read ahead. Used by WEBTOON [7].

A free reading plan
Combine the free systems: latest chapters for weekly series, daily unlocks for older ones, and free episodes to fill gaps.
- Weekly series: read each new chapter free on MANGA Plus or Shonen Jump the day it comes out.
- One long series: catch up a chapter a day with K MANGA.
- Two more series: use the daily unlocks on Comikey and Mangamo.
- Gaps: fill them with WEBTOON’s free episodes.
If waiting for one series each day gets slow, a paid plan removes the wait; plans start at $1.99 a month [5]. Our guide to MangaPark alternatives compares the paid plans.
Why we don’t send you to MangaOwl or its copies
Piracy and publishers
Because unlicensed manga sites cost the publishers who pay the artists. A survey CODA ran for Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry put losses from online piracy of Japanese content at ¥5.7 trillion in 2025, about three times the 2022 figure [18]. Publishers act on it: a complaint by KADOKAWA, Kodansha, Shueisha, Shogakukan and Square Enix led Shanghai police to close the 60-site BATO.TO network, MangaPark included, by January 2026 [19].
Free apps we no longer recommend
Tapas closes on 31 March 2027, it stopped giving out free Ink on 1 October 2026, and unlocked episodes won’t be readable after it shuts [20]. For anime and films, see Vegamovies alternatives; for live sport, Vipbox alternatives; and more in Entertainment.
Questions people ask
Is MangaOwl legal?
We could not confirm that any publisher licensed it, so we don’t link to it. Every app on this page is run by a publisher or licensed by one.
Where can I read One Piece free and legally?
On MANGA Plus, where the first three and newest three chapters are free [1], and on Shonen Jump, where the latest chapters are free [2].
Which manga app is completely free?
None of the licensed apps makes every chapter free. WEBTOON offers “millions of episodes for FREE” [7], and MANGA Plus lets you read every chapter of an ongoing English series once for free [1].
Can I read manga free without an app?
Yes. Shonen Jump’s website has a Read Free Manga section [3], and WEBTOON and Comikey work in a web browser [8] [9].
